Tom Bergeron Brasil Band at Marshanne Landing
Brazilian Music in Oakland
On Saturday 19 July, the Tom Bergeron Brasil Band will be featured at MarshAnne Landing in beautiful Oakland, OR. The sextet comprises master saxophonist and WOU music professor Tom Bergeron; the singer and native of Rio de Janeiro, Rosi Bergeron; pianist Cassio Vianna – also from Rio de Janeiro; guitarist Don Latarski; bassist Page Hundemer; and the Portland-based drummer Jason Palmer.
Brasil Band plays an eclectic range of Brazilian styles: the virtuosic instrumental choro that was popular in the early 20th Century, the romantic song-samba from the 1930s & 1940s, the sultry bossa nova, lively contemporary hits, original compositions, and the shake-your-booty-style samba popular today in Rio’s trendy Lapa district.
Leader Tom Bergeron has been researching and performing Brazilian music for more than 40 years, and he returns to Rio annually to perform and marinate in the tropical vibe.
Singer Rosi Bergeron was immersed from an early age in the musical culture of her native Rio de Janeiro, singing and dancing at Rio’s legendary samba schools during Carnaval season. Although she sings in many grooves, her favorite is samba, and she will bring her distinctive approach to this genre, with sambas both well-known and obscure.
Pianist Cassio Vianna led the house band at the jazz club, Patio Havana, in the chic Brazilian beach town of Búzios before moving to Oregon in 2009. Since his arrival, Cassio has become widely admired for his mastery of Brazilian genres, from choro and samba to Brazilian jazz and pop. His energetic and rhythmic piano style is the heart of the Brazil Band groove.
Joining the band on this show will be the fabulously talented and versatile Eugene guitarist, Don Latarski, bringing his unique finger-style playing to the mix. The enormously inventive bassist Page Hundemer and drum phenomenon Jason Palmer will round out the sextet.
The Tom Bergeron Brasil Band plays regularly at night clubs and wineries throughout the Willamette Valley. For more information, visit the Brasil Band website.
