"over the Rainbow": Judy Garland in Hollywood at Oregon Festival of American Music at The John G Shedd Institute for the Arts
We can't help it: even though this year's festival is supposed to begin in 1940, it's impossible to pay tribute to Judy Garland without reference to her legendary breakout performance in 1939's The Wizard of Oz. As much as that continues to shape our memory of her, Garland was so much more than Dorothy, and most of her best work came afterwards, in the 15 years ending with A Star Is Born (1954) and including such memorable, song-filled gems as Girl Crazy (1943), Meet Me In St. Louis (1944), The Harvey Girls (1946), and Easter Parade (1948). Shirley Andress and the Emerald City Jazz Kings present a special version her stunning tribute to Judy Garland (originally created for the Emerald City Jazz Kings), featuring as well that fine fellow-chanteuse, Siri Vik.
